Lockwood's shoppers say, "I come here just to feel better...the plants, the light, the beauty...and you're all so nice."

Lockwood's Today

From farm to roadside stand, from greenhouse grower to full service garden center… Lockwood’s has come a long way.  The evolution from the 1914 farm has amazed four generations of Lockwoods, and members of the fifth generation are already working in the garden center learning the business today.  The current partners are father and son, Harry and Steve Lockwood.

Today the Lockwoods manage a 9 acre farm, with 3 acres dedicated to Christmas trees, nine plant production greenhouses and the garden center. The retail business includes a 26,000 square-foot garden center, and 28 employees during the growing season.  The garden center sells a full line of plants—from houseplants and annuals to perennials, vines, shrubs, and trees—as well as gifts, books, gardening supplies, tools, compost, and mulch.  At Christmas it’s also a center for gifts and holiday decorating, featuring handmade wreaths and fresh trees, with a series of workshops to help you make your own decorations.

During prosperous times and recessions, the growth has been steady, for which the Lockwood family and staff are ever grateful.

A Destination

Today Lockwood’s Greenhouses is known as a destination garden center, and even a draw for tourists.  People travel to see it—sometimes by the busload—because they’ve heard “it’s so beautiful!” or because they know about the unusually large plant selection.  Nearly all the annuals are grown on premises, carefully tended by the year-round growing staff, and people have learned that a Lockwood’s basket or Lockwood's plant will have been cared for lovingly until it reached the exit sign.  Some come to Lockwood’s for the tasteful and artistic gifts in the retail shop (open from March 15 through December 31st annually).

Another feature of Lockwood’s is the dedication to education.  People come just because of the gardening classes, hands-on workshops, or guest speakers, mostly in spring and fall through Christmas (see Classes and Events).  The Fall Garden Fair is the largest one-day event, followed in popularity by our Christmas Open House.

Finally, people may come to Lockwood’s for plants or gifts, to attend a class, or to ask a gardening questioning.  But whatever the reason, they return to Lockwood’s because the whole experience is so satisfying.
